14 Sep We’re being tricked. And we look like idiots too.

We’re being tricked. And we look like idiots too.

This sums up our current relationship with technology. We’re hooked and it’s robbing us of our smarts while making us look like slack-necked drones. Allow me to first confess my self-awareness that I am guilty of both being tricked and definitely looking like an idiot.

There’s a fantastic piece in this month’s Outside Magazine about how we all spend way too much time on our phones, computers, tablets, etc. Only what makes the piece great is that it isn’t simply about the virtues of going outside. Rather, it attacks it from a scientific place. What exactly is happening to our brains because of our reliance (nay, obsession?) with technology?

This sums up our current relationship with technology. We’re hooked and it’s robbing us of our smarts while making us look like slack-necked drones.

The results as you can imagine are not pretty. Read the piece (PREFERRABLY IN A PHYSICAL MAGAZINE!). Our brains essentially atrophy each time we pick up our phones to spy on Facebook or open our laptops to compulsively check email. But the good news is our brains grow right the hell back, and usually even stronger, when you give it the chance to think critically.

Are we saying to ditch the technology? Nope. We’re not going to any time soon. But we like to think we can all take some time to look outside, pick up a pencil, or forego that email for a chat over coffee. Turns out those things make you feel good because you’re actually growing your brain. Now stop reading this and go outside.
